Cartooning is so much more than the silly sibling of Illustration. Cartooning is its own visual language created by keen observation, individual interpretation, drawing skills, and design choices that exaggerate, simplify, and stylize. That language is based on a way of seeing and processing, and it has many different “art regional” accents. Cartoon art can be satirical, political, charming, masterful, hilarious, emotional, surreal and cinematic; there are so many ways to cartoon. We love them all.

This drawing-intensive retreat is a deep dive into who has done it best and why they do it best. We will zero in on what cartoon-specific skills you can build and improve upon to make your cartooning its best. We will talk about cartoons, comics, comic strips, children’s books, cartoonists, and of course… watch some cartoons.

We are looking for ten cartoon-loving artists who want to work on their cartooning skills. The retreat is being kept small so we can work with each artist individually. Come ready to draw! Pack all of your favorite cartooning tools! We will have some for you to try out as well.
